The City Alexander Could Not Conquer
Alexander the Great, fresh from his conquest of Perge, approached Termessos with his mighty army. But the fierce Pisidian warriors and the city's impregnable mountain position forced even the greatest conqueror to retreat.
The ancient historian Arrian recorded that Alexander compared the narrow pass to Termessos as a “nest of eagles” - a fortress that would cost too many lives to capture. This strategic withdrawal remains one of the few times Alexander chose not to fight.
This act of defiance against the world's greatest military commander became a source of immense pride for the Termessians, who commemorated their independence for centuries afterward.
